During an interview with Geo Cinema, Raina shared the details of his conversation with Dhoni, stating,
“MS Dhoni sought my permission before including Robin Uthappa in the playing XI. I told him to replace me with Uthappa, as he had worked incredibly hard throughout the season, even though he might not have gotten a chance in 2021.”
The revelation sheds light on the reason behind Raina’s absence from the playing XI in the final matches of the tournament, a decision that had sparked widespread debate and raised questions among his fans. In the 2021 edition of the IPL, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) played a total of 16 matches, with Raina featuring in only 12 of them. Dhoni’s decision to drop him for the last four matches of the season had left many wondering about the rationale behind the move. However, Raina’s selfless act to make way for Uthappa in the team now offers a new perspective on the situation.
It is worth noting that despite Raina’s absence, the CSK went on to win the IPL 2021 title. However, his subsequent unsold status in the IPL 2022 auction led to his retirement from the league this year. Raina’s IPL career spanned 200 matches, during which he amassed an impressive total of 5,528 runs, including a century.
The recent revelation by Raina showcases his commitment to the team and his willingness to prioritize the success and opportunities of his teammates. Such selflessness and team spirit are commendable qualities that have made Raina a beloved figure in Indian cricket.
